Sustainability is in our DNA. Everything we do also has sustainability at its core. We recognise the importance of operational consciousness and our role in ensuring the long-term viability of our planet and its resources. Not only do we embrace key ESG principles, including sound governance practices, compliant behaviour and the mindful use of resources, but we also work hard to deliver positive social impacts, maintaining strong relationships with our employees, customers and communities.

Our environmental targets

Our amibition is to be a responsible producer and distributor, a responsible employer as well as a responsible market participant. To achieve our objectives and ambitions, our starting point is the UN's 17 global goals according to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to:

  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations and obligations
  • Increase knowledge and awareness of environmental issues among all employees
  • Influence, make demands and collaborate with other companies, suppliers, authorities and organizations
  • See environmental measures as investments
  • Constantly strive to improve the utilization of our resources within the company

Environmental Objectives

On top of following the UN's global goals, Mediplast also follows three internal environmental objectives:

  • Decrease the environmental impact from transports of manufacutred devices
  • Decrease the environmental impact from company cars
  • Increase awareness of environmental impact at Mediplast's contract manufacturers and suppliers

Warehouse

Mediplast has implemented a comprehensive waste reduction program aimed at minimizing waste generation during our manufacturing processes. We have invested in recycling facilities and advanced equipment to enhance efficiency in waste management. Our recent upgrades include larger containers equipped with better compression technology, significantly reducing the frequency of waste collection. Previously collected weekly, these containers now require pickup only once every two weeks, saving both time and operational costs.

By increasing train transportation and using different transport options, we aim to reduce our CO2 emissions, reduce road congestion and improve the reliability of the delivery of our products.

Supplier management

At Mediplast, we prioritize sustainability and ethical practices throughout our supply chain. We collaborate with EcoVadis, a leading provider of business sustainability ratings, to evaluate our suppliers’ environmental, social, and ethical performance. Regular supplier audits are conducted to ensure compliance with our stringent standards and to identify areas for improvement. Additionally, we perform comprehensive supplier risk assessments to mitigate potential risks and ensure the integrity and reliability of our supply chain.

Production

Vinnova project regarding sustainable manufacturing together with NCSH (Nordic Center of Sustainable Healthcare).

Project title: Green design in disposable items. Feasibility study with the improvement of the Mediplast Vomit Bag

Scope: The feasibility study will facilitate the sustainable improvement of the design and manufacturing process of the Mediplast Vomit Bag. Focus on the different segments and materials that could be improved for sustainability. The project will include an impact assessment on sustainable healthcare, to enrich the sustainable improvement of medical products from a systemic approach.

Legal Requirements

Mediplat’s legal requirements include sustainability reporting and the Transparency Act Norway to strengthen public and investor confidence, improve its long-term sustainability strategy and have a positive impact on the environment and society.

QEMS

Mediplast is certified to international standards, including ISO 13485:2016, ISO 14001:2015, and MDR 2017/74. Our Quality and Environmental Management System (QEMS) guides all company activities and is regularly audited to ensure compliance and continuous improvement. We are dedicated to meeting all regulatory standards, ensuring the safety and legality of our products.

People

At Mediplast, we recognize that a sustainable culture is crucial to our success. We foster an open, collaborative, and supportive environment, valuing diversity and inclusion to ensure everyone feels respected and valued. Our commitment to ethical business practices includes mandatory code of conduct training for all employees, a zero-tolerance policy against harassment and discrimination, and a whistleblower channel for anonymous reporting. We also conduct bi-monthly and annual employee surveys to address any concerns.

Travelling is an essential part of conducting our business at Mediplast. To minimize our environmental impact, we promote the use of electric and hybrid vehicles in our car policy. Business travel must be efficient, safe, and compliant with company standards, with a preference for virtual meetings. When travelling is necessary, public transportation is prioritized.

Products

Mediplast has implemented several initiatives aimed at reducing our environmental impact. One such initiative is the increased use of eco-friendly materials in our product manufacturing. We have made a concerted effort to reduce the use of harmful chemicals and substances in our products, opting instead for more sustainable materials that are biodegradable or recyclable.

  • Removing DEHP Plasticizers in most materials for production
  • Using recycled materials for our products when is it compliant with regulations.
  • 100% recycled material for one specific product line
  • Sustainable plant material for production of our tubular bandages
  • PVC free options for certain product line dedicated to meeting all regulatory standards, ensuring the safety and legality of our products.
ACTIONS

CO2 reduction

We merely cooperate with forwarders and shipping partners who has a sustainable profile with the aim of contributing to more sustainable logistics and reduced emissions intensity. As an example, our two largest inbound goods supply is transported by train to minimize the CO2 impact. We are changing our car-policy to become solely Hybrid and Electrical, supporting the European commission’s goal to ensure that all new cars registered in Europe will be zero-emission by 2035.
